Having just watched the amazing footage of the pilots who just completed the first solar power flight around the world, one phrase really stuck with me. "When you dare to fail, you can suceed". Pretty powerful mantra to live by 💖💖💖 ... See MoreSee Less

I have just come back from Central London on business (Not POBL related) and I have to tell you about a true experience that I had that upset me. I had finished what I had been doing in the City, and in line with many professionals at the end of a busy day, I joined others outside a trendy bar for a cold beer and some tapas. I couldnt help noticing (because the others didnt seem too :-( a couple in their late sixties sat on some cardboard in the sweltering heat. She was listening to a radio and he was stripped to the waist fast asleep. They didnt appear to be the stereotypical homeless types that we are all to quick to conjure up in our minds with a bottle of sherry in one hand and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier on a blanket next to them. No, there was something about these pensioners that was burning into my head as I tucked into my food and downed yet another cold beer. I could not stand it any longer and something in my head kept telling me to go and speak to them. What struck me was nobody else seemed to. I had a feeling that said 'go and speak to them because it could be you one day'. So I did, and this is what happened. The couple who I had thought were in their 60's told me that they were in fact the same age as me 45!

They had been living on the streets for over 10 years after he lost his job in the newspaper game as a printer. They had tried many times to get a place to live in London and had failed. Again, I was surprised at how articulate they both were. All of my prejudices (And we all have them!) were being turned on their heads and I felt uncomfortable by it if I am honest with you.

She had battled with depression all her life, but said she 'felt safe with him because he would protect her'. There was much more to them. I asked if I could do anything for them or if they needed anything (I meant money because I had no clue what else I could do). They said all they wanted was for people to realise how close we all are to being in a situatiuon like theirs. They never imagined life to be like it was and if they could at least tell others then that would be good.

I wont say anymore and many hand wringing do-gooders will be reading this saying 'Oh how can you not understand people, you run a Charity etc'. I will tell you why, its because I am a human. I am fallible, I make mistakes, I am not perfect, but I am me. I learned so many lessons yesterday from a 15 minute meeting. The most important lesson I learned yesterday though was EVERYONE HAS A STORY. If you listen, they will tell it.
